Why Voice Over Training Matters
Now More Than Ever
In today’s rapidly evolving entertainment landscape, voice over work isn’t just a creative pursuit—it’s a strategic craft that demands precision, versatility, and a deep understanding of a constantly shifting industry. With AI entering the arena, the internet opening submission pools to global competition, and remote recording becoming the new normal since the pandemic, voice artists are now expected to do more—and be more—than ever before.
Gone are the days when raw talent alone could carry you. Now, clients, casting directors, and agents are looking for polish, professionalism, and performers who understand the specifics of the job. Because voice over is not one monolith—it’s an intricate web of styles and demands: animation, commercial, PSA, narration, video games, dubbing, ADR, motion capture, voice mimicry, walla, Foley... each with its own rhythm, energy, and nuance.
That’s why training matters. And that’s why training with a working professional—someone who’s in the industry, of the industry, and actively navigating it alongside you—makes all the difference.
When you coach with Ely Jackson, you’re not just learning technique. You’re learning relevance. Ely brings first-hand, up-to-date insight from the world of professional voice acting—insight that can take years to discover on your own, and that often gets missed in traditional classroom settings. She teaches not just how to read a script, but how to own it—breaking down character, finding emotional truth, adapting your performance to match different formats, and understanding the real-world expectations of agents, studios, and clients.
In a saturated market where thousands are submitting for the same roles, training sets you apart. It gives you the edge in agent interviews. It helps you feel prepared instead of panicked when opportunity knocks. And it arms you with the confidence that comes from knowing—knowing your voice, your strengths, your process, and the industry you're stepping into.
Voice over is an art—but it’s also a business. The more skilled, knowledgeable, and adaptable you are, the more likely you are to be seen, signed, and booked.
This is your time. Be ready for it. Train smart. Train with someone who’s walked the walk. And start building the foundation that can carry your career—not just now, but for the long run.
Why Accent Work Matters
Just As Much
Accent work is one of the most underrated, yet crucial, aspects of an actor’s craft. It can make or break a performance—and, by extension, an entire film or series. We’ve all been there: watching a gripping scene only to be pulled out of the story by a faltering accent. Suddenly, you’re no longer immersed in the character—you’re on IMDb, wondering where the actor is actually from and why no one stepped in to help them sound like they belong.
Suspension of disbelief is a contract between the audience and the screen—but a poor accent breaks that contract. It’s like shattering the fourth wall with sound. A flawless accent, on the other hand, disappears into the story. It allows the audience to invest, to believe, and to feel. It becomes a silent cornerstone of authenticity.
I still watch films and series—some with A-list actors—where the accent just isn’t there. It’s distracting. It's disheartening. And sometimes, it’s a dealbreaker. There are productions I simply can’t finish because the accent work undermines the rest of the artistry. It's painful to think of how much time, talent, and money goes into these projects, only to be undone by something so preventable.
Then there are the greats—the moments that remind us how powerful accent mastery can be. Jack O’Connell’s haunting portrayal of Remmick in Sinners (2025), seamlessly weaving between Irish and Southern American dialects to enhance his villainy. Or Jodie Comer in Killing Eve, dazzling audiences with her pitch-perfect ability to embody a range of accents, elevating her already brilliant performance to something unforgettable. That kind of vocal agility doesn’t just win scenes—it wins careers.
Imagine you're up for the role of your life. It's down to you and one other actor. The difference? They’ve mastered the accent the role requires—and you haven’t. Or worse, the accent is crucial, and yours doesn’t hold. Casting directors can’t risk being the reason audiences disengage. They won’t. And that role—the one that could’ve changed everything—is gone.
This is why accent work is non-negotiable. It’s the difference between being overlooked and being remembered. Between almost and absolutely.
When the moment comes, you need to be ready—fluent, fearless, and believable. Because when your voice fully inhabits a character, you’re not just playing the part—you are the part. And that’s when the real magic happens.
